Privacy policy

Qlotela is an app that warns drivers in Ghana about speed cameras and police speed checks, reported by other drivers. This policy explains what we collect when you use the Qlotela app and this website, why, who processes it for us, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. Questions or requests: privacy@qlotela.com.
What we collect
Without an account
Alerts work without signing in. To show the points near you, the app sends your current location to our server, which answers with the points around it. We don’t store these requests or link them to you. Your phone uses its location to decide when to warn you; we never store your route or a history of where you’ve been.
When you sign in
- Your phone number. We text it a one-time code, and it identifies your account. Other drivers never see it.
- Your reports. When you report a camera or police unit, we store where your phone was, the direction and speed you were travelling, the time, and any speed limit you add, linked to your account.
- Your votes. When you answer “Still there?” after passing a point, we store your answer and the time. We check you were near the point, but don’t store where you were.
- Your report weight. A score that goes up when other drivers confirm what you report and down when they mark a camera you reported as gone.
- Rewards. If we reward you for confirmed reports, we record the amount, how we sent it and when.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report with your phone model, Android version, app version and what went wrong. Crash reports don’t include your name, phone number or location.
How we use it
- To warn you about cameras and police units ahead of you.
- To show points to other drivers. They see where a point is, what it is and how many drivers reported it, never who reported it.
- To confirm points that several drivers report, and remove points drivers mark as gone.
- To limit abuse, such as too many reports from one account.
- To decide and pay rewards for confirmed reports.
- To find and fix problems in the app.
We don’t sell your data, and we don’t show ads.
Who processes it for us
These services handle data on our behalf, only to run Qlotela:
- Supabase stores our database and runs sign-in, on servers in Ireland.
- Twilio sends the sign-in codes by SMS.
- Sentry receives crash reports.
- Expo delivers app updates.
- Vercel hosts this website.
- OpenFreeMap serves the map. Like any website, it sees which part of the map your phone loads.
We share data with others only if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Your account, reports and votes: until you delete your account.
- Police units disappear from the map 90 minutes after the last sighting. About a day later they’re deleted, with their reports and votes.
- Crash reports: up to 90 days.
- Records of rewards we paid you (phone number, amount, date): kept after you delete your account, for our accounts.
Your choices
- Use Qlotela without an account. Only reporting and voting need one.
- Delete your account at any time: in the app (tap your avatar, then Delete account) or on this website. Points only you reported are removed with it.
- Ask for a copy of your data, or for it to be corrected, by emailing privacy@qlotela.com.
- Turn off location for Qlotela in your phone’s settings. Alerts stop working without it.
- Complain to Ghana’s Data Protection Commission if you think we’ve misused your data under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
Security
Everything the app and website send is encrypted in transit. Our database only lets each driver read their own account details, and reports reach it only through checks we control.
Children
Qlotela is for drivers. It isn’t meant for anyone under 18, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
